US confirms it has weapons deployed in orbit

The US just admitted, for the first time, that it has weapons in space. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink made the confirmation Monday. He said the US operates what he called 'on-orbit space control weapons.' Those weapons defend US and allied forces from attack, he said. It's a message aimed squarely at China and Russia.

Meink didn't say what these weapons are or how many exist. That's deliberate. The whole point of announcing a capability without describing it is to make an adversary guess. Arms-control experts warn this cuts both ways. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty bans weapons of mass destruction in orbit, but it says nothing about conventional ones. So this is legal. It's also the kind of move that can invite the very escalation it's meant to prevent.
