xAI built one of the biggest batteries at any US data center

Elon Musk's AI company xAI runs a massive supercomputer called Colossus in Memphis, Tennessee. It needs huge, unpredictable bursts of electricity to train AI models. Canary Media, an energy news outlet, studied satellite images from July. It counted 720 Tesla battery containers on site. That's likely the biggest battery installation at any US data center. xAI hasn't said how much power it can actually store.

The battery isn't just a nice-to-have. Training AI models causes huge, fast swings in power demand, the kind that can strain a local electric grid. Batteries soak up those swings instead of forcing the grid to absorb them directly. xAI has faced sustained pushback in Memphis over the past year. Neighbors worry about air pollution from gas turbines, grid strain, and water use. A bigger battery is at least part of xAI's answer to those complaints.
