Quantum-Si delays its protein-reading device, cuts staff

Reading a protein is much harder than reading DNA. DNA is a fixed code, the same four letters repeating in a predictable order. Proteins fold into millions of different shapes, and a machine has to read each one differently. Quantum-Si has spent years building a machine that claims to do exactly that. This week, it admitted the machine isn't ready yet.

The setback isn't necessarily fatal. Quantum-Si beat Wall Street's revenue estimate this quarter, even though the number itself was tiny: $344,000. That's still a research-tool company, not yet a real commercial product. The company says the delay is about manufacturing readiness, not a scientific failure. It wants better repeatability and higher yields before shipping Proteus to customers. Each delay still burns more of the cash Quantum-Si has left, even with the new cuts.
