Starcloud raises $250M to build AI data centers in orbit

AI data centers eat huge amounts of power, water, and land. Good sites on Earth are getting harder to find. Starcloud is betting on a stranger fix: put the data center in orbit instead. On Aug. 21, the startup told TechCrunch it raised another $250 million. That's on top of a $170 million round from March. That doubles its valuation to $2.3 billion. Nvidia joined this round too. Its newest AI chip is set to fly on Starcloud's future satellites.

Space might sound like a strange place for a computer. But orbit has two things AI data centers need badly. Nonstop sunlight for power, and wide open space to radiate away heat. No permits, no local water fights, no neighbors complaining about noise. Nvidia's interest is the real signal here. Chipmakers don't hand their newest hardware to unproven ideas. The problem nobody's solved yet is repair. If a satellite server fails, nobody's driving out to swap the part.
